Breach

April 2021
8'h x 86'w x 1'd
Aluminum, steel, LEDs
Jefferson Middle School Academy
Washington, D.C.
Fences signify the foundation of our modern world by demarcating what, historically, has kept one thing separate from another. We decided to approach this conceptual challenge by also realizing that the physical existence of a barrier automatically indicates the two opposing spaces are now inextricably interconnected.
We have designed Breach to fulfill its physical expectations. However, through intentional design and material choice we hope to encourage a vibrant and shared experience between both the students immediately within school and also the broader community surrounding Jefferson Middle School Academy.
Somewhat paradoxically, if we are going to build a fence, we want to build one that brings communities and people together.
